G ADVENTURES ACQUIRES SWAN HELLENIC BRAND (UPDATED)

The pioneering adventure travel operator, G Adventures, has acquired the elegant, upscale Swan Hellenic brand today.

Swan Hellenic was formerly part of the All Leisure Group, which went bankrupt just after Christmas. All Leisure was immediately forced to suspend sailings of both its Swan Hellenic and Voyages of Discovery brands.

Now G Adventures is preparing to relaunch Swan Hellenic next year, with provisional itineraries to be announced this coming summer. The new owners are at pains to maintain that the on board atmosphere aboard the line’s one and only ship- the Minerva- will continue to remain focused to the tastes of it’s fiercely loyal British clientele.

At just under 13,000 tons, the Minerva carries just 350 passengers in an ambiance that is reminiscent of a floating English country house. And, with her ice strengthened hull, the 1989 built ship is able to venture into areas where few other ships can safely go.

Swan Hellenic places the emphasis very much on educational voyages, charting the history and evolution of the regions of call it visits, typically on itineraries of twelve to fourteen nights. Highlights of the Swan Hellenic product includes expert, on board guest lecturers covering fields such as history, politics and religion. The line is also famous for including all shore excursions,  as well as offering free beer, wine and soft drinks at both lunch and dinner.

A welcome piece of news, indeed. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE:

Since this piece went ‘live’, I have been reliably informed that what G Adventures have acquired is the brand and the IP for Swan Hellenic. The Minerva- which sailed under charter for SH- has, apparently, been returned to he owner.
